Problems/Comments
The Monarch, Brenner, and Jewell mill sites are associated with gold lode mines which operated from the early to mid 1900s. The Monarch is the largest of the three mills and has the largest volume of tailings remaining on-site. The Brenner mill is located about 800 feet from the Monarch and has a smaller volume of tailings which are partially located in, and being eroded by, Crow Creek. The Jewell mill is located approximately 1200 feet from the Monarch mill. The mills are located on the Chugach National Forest and can be accessed by the Crow Pass Trail. The three mills are being addressed as a group by the US Forest Service and given their proximity to one another and similarities will be considered to be one site.

For this site, DEC stated: In May 2014, the USFS requested that DEC review and provide comments on a draft EE/CA work plan. Although DEC provided comments and a comment resolution meeting was held in July, a final work plan was not developed and field work occurred in July 2014. In an email message in January 2016, the USFS stated that it would provide a draft report to DEC for review and comment in 2-3 months. To date, DEC has not received a copy of that draft report.
