Problems/Comments
Three landfill sites in Galena were sampled in 1995 for evidence of contamination on the soil surface, in the surface water, and in the down-gradient groundwater. LF008 was known as the "current landfill" in 1995, though it is currently covered by soil and not in use. In 1995, chromium, arsenic, vanadium, lead, zinc, and copper were detected in the groundwater samples taken. Arsenic (0.022 mg/L) and lead (0.022 mg/L) were detected above groundwater cleanup levels. Though there was work performed in 2011 and 2012 to establish background concentrations of RCRA metals in the Galena groundwater, there are no agreed upon background levels for the groundwater in the region. Antimony (5.1 mg/kg) and arsenic (8.6 mg/kg) were also detected in 1995 in the soil at this site above ADEC Method Two migration to groundwater cleanup levels. This landfill was covered and closed in 1998 with further monitoring to be conducted. DRO, GRO, and RRO analytical sampling must be completed at this site, and groundwater monitoring should be conducted downgradient of this site with a wider variety of targeted analytes. The wetlands north of this site should be investigated for any sign of contamination, as the as-built drawings of this site indicate a drainage channel in that direction.
