Problems/Comments

The Holland America Westours site is located near Salmon Creek in an industrial/commercial-zoned area, about four miles NW of downtown Juneau. The site is used for maintaining and storing commercial tour buses. The site is either paved with concrete or asphalt around a small office building and the large warehouse/shop. Petroleum contamination in soil was originally discovered May 3, 1991, when underground storage tank (UST) #1 (1,000-gallon gasoline) and UST #2 (10,000-gallon diesel) were removed (See Hazard ID 24907). UST #3 replaced these two tanks in May 1991. About 130 cubic yards of contaminated soil were excavated and temporarily stored onsite. Oversized material screened from excavated contaminated soil was placed above the new 5,000 gallon tank. The remaining 103 cubic yards of soil were mixed with cement slurry and sealed (6 inch concrete cap) over the new tank. UST #3 (5,000-gallon diesel) was removed from property on October 22, 2009. Soil samples collected in 2009 tank removal were not analyzed per Table 2A. Soil from 2009 excavation & tank removal was notably clean and returned to excavation area. ADEC requested further site work. In September 2010, additional soil samples were collected from a trench adjacent to previous tank location & analyzed per ADEC's request. All soil sample results returned below laboratory detection limit. Property is built on well-sorted sand & gravel delta. Subsurface groundwater level fluctuates seasonally. No groundwater was encountered during either tank excavation or 2010 excavation. The site is connected to municipal water for drinking and industrial uses.
