Problems/Comments

In June 2011 two diesel underground heating oil tanks (HOTs) were removed at the Salcha Elementary School: a 500-gallon HOT at the ski portable building and a 600-gallon HOT at the music portable building. Analytical samples from the ski building HOT were all non-detect for diesel range organics (DRO), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) but the lab limit of quantitation was above the DEC method 2 cleanup level. There was some evidence of a slow leaking fitting on a fuel line of the HOT at the music building. Stockpiled soil contaminated with DRO above the DEC Method 2 cleanup level was used as backfill for the excavation of the music building HOT.
