Problems/Comments

In August 2014 heating fuel odors were reportedly emanating from the University Estates Condominium complex at 130 Vassar Circle. During a site visit by DEC staff, fuel vapors were discovered exhausting from the basement crawl space at the ventilation system and water with floating sewage was also discovered in the crawlspace. A submersible pump was pumping water from the crawl space, discharging to the surrounding surface. DEC staff requested that the pumping be discontinued and that the discharged water be sampled for total and fecal coliform, results of which exceeded water quality standards. DEC also requested a tank tightness test be performed on the underground heating oil tank. The source of the release has yet to be determined. Previously, in April 2012 DEC was notified of vapors entering the same building from a release of an unknown amount of fuel from a line connected to the furnace, after furnace maintenance was performed at the same address. DEC emergency response staff made a site visit. The spill was subsequently closed.
