Problems/Comments

Sampling conducted by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has detected hydrocarbon and heavy metal contamination in soil at debris piles or downgradient from these areas. Specific concerns are with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, lead and mercury. The site was developed as an Army Air Warning Station in 1943 to transmit warning data to Attu during WWII. It was then subsequently used by the Navy as a mobile navigation antenna site during 1962 and again in 1965. The site was added to the federal Hazardous Waste Compliance Docket on June 27, 1997. Debris scattered on 400 acres include equipment, thousands of drums, four aboveground storage tanks (ASTs), halved fuselage of a Lockheed PV-1 Ventura patrol bomber, antenna system, collapsed 130-foot antenna, generator sheds, water tanks, huts, and lead/acid batteries. Wreckage of Japanese destroyer "Nenohi", sunk 7/4/1942, lies off the coast. Both Army and Navy used Agattu Island. (EPA CERCLIS ID#: AK0001413673).

The purpose of the is to collaborate with FUDS management on site progress and prioritization for all of the formerly used defense sites. FUDS prioritization is based on risk, congressional interest, state input and proximity to other sites on the prioritization list. FUDS has increased environmental restoration funding in Alaska for the 2017 and 2018 field seasons to meet National goals for site progress. Darren Mulkey
