Problems/Comments

On July 8, 2013 above ground storage tank #10 at the Saint Michael AVEC power plant tank farm overfilled while receiving diesel fuel. The cell where the spill occurred does not have an intact liner. The volume of the release is believed to be less than 50 gallons. Initial response efforts included: stopping the pumping, lowering the fuel level in the tank, deploying absorbent pads around the tank, and digging a trench to collect free product. Approximately 0.5 cubic yard of contaminated soil was removed and stored in a fish tote on site. Petroleum-contaminated soil remains within the containment area and is currently inaccessible due to the presence of the tanks. Due to construction of a new power plant in Stebbins and intertie to Saint Michael, AVEC is planning to decommission the Saint Michael power plant tank farm after the current fuel stores are depleted in July 2015.
