Problems/Comments
A radio communications tower at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Talkeetna Flight Service Station building. The tower is approximately 30 feet tall and is painted with flaking lead-based paint. It is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2015 and replaced with a new aluminum antenna. In a 2015 site visit, paint chips were visible in the soil near the base of the tower. Samples were collected from around the base of the tower, up to 4’ away, and lead was detected in one sample at a concentration of 2,800 mg/kg at the base of the tower.

10/10/2016 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | DEC approves the final report entitled “Remediation Summary Talkeetna Communications Tower Decommissioning and Soil Remediation.” The report describes the method and procedures used to remediate lead-contaminated soil at the Flight Service Station (FSS), Talkeetna Airport. Approximately 2 cubic yards of contaminated soils were removed from the area around the communications tower. Contamination was confined to the surface and upper 1 ft. of soil in the immediate vicinity of the communication tower. Confirmation soil sample results ranged from 5.3 mg/kg to 9.0 mg/kg for lead, which is below the DEC soil cleanup level of 400 mg/kg. | Joy Whitsel |
12/22/2016 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and no further remedial action will be required unless new information becomes available that indicates residual contaminants may pose an unacceptable risk | Joy Whitsel |
