Problems/Comments
The Hadley Smelter was constructed in the early 1900s by the Hadley Consolidated Copper Company. The smelter operated from 1905-1908. Nearby mines continued to operate and ore was sent to a smelter in British Columbia, Canada (BC). Fires occurred in 1915 and 1918 and the smelter machinery was moved to BC. In 1965, a private entity purchased part of the site and constructed summer cabins. The rest of the site was transferred to Kavilco under ANCSA. Black slag is present in large mounds in the uplands and to a depth of at least 2-3 feet in the inter-tidal area. Copper and other metals have been confirmed in soil above DEC cleanup levels.
