Problems/Comments
Atka Air Force Auxiliary Airfield was established during WWII as a long-range fighter and medium bomber air field to support operations in the Aleutian theatre. Historical Photographic Analysis and Archival Research indicate that munitions were used, stored, and disposed at the facility. Specific locations have been identified that are munitions related that require investigation.

5/15/2012 | CERCLA PA | Submit letter to USACE identifying deficiencies in the Draft Preliminary assessment for the Atka Air Force Auxiliary Field MMRP Project. ADEC does not concur with the NDAI determination for the site. Additional investigation is required. ADEC recommends forwarding the site to Site Inspection (SI). | Guy Warren |
6/9/2015 | Site Added to Database | A new site has been added to the database | Mitzi Read |
7/7/2017 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | ADEC received and reviewed the Draft Final UFP-QAPP, FUDS and Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Site Inspection, Atka Air Force Auxiliary Field, OB/OD, Craters, and Rifle Range MRS, June 2017. This Uniform Federal Policy-Quality Assurance Project Plan (UFP-QAPP) was prepared for implementation of a Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Site Inspection (SI) at the Atka Air Force Auxiliary Field (AF Aux Fld) Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) located on Atka Island, Alaska. The SI will address the Rifle Range Area (Munitions Response Area [MRS] D). The following potential MRAs will be inspected in support of determining their eligibility for inclusion in the FUDS MMRP: Possible Open Burn/Open Detonation (OB/OD) Area 1, 521st Combat Engineers Area, Korovin Bomb Crater Area, Atka Village Area, Port and Materials Area, Utilities Area, Navy Area, I Company Area, M Company Area, Air Corps Area, Outpost No. 3 Atka Platoon Area, Headquarters Area, and Hill 186 Outpost Area. | Darren Mulkey |
4/4/2019 | CERCLA SI | A Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Site Inspection (SI) was performed at the Atka Air Force Auxiliary Field (AF Aux Fld) Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) F10AK085104, located on Atka Island, Alaska (Figures 1 and 2, Appendix A). Although not intended as a fullscale study of nature and extent of contamination or explosive hazards, this SI investigated munitions-related debris (including munitions and explosives of concern [MEC] and munition constituents [MC]) that may remain from activities conducted during World War II (WWII) military operations and that may pose a threat to human health and/or the environment at the Rifle Range Area (Munitions Response Site [MRS D]) on Atka Island. The SI also collected data to update the Munitions Response Site Prioritization Protocol (MRSPP). The only exception to the NFA recommendation is the 521st Combat Engineers Area, which requires further consideration. The background anomaly transect detected one subsurface anomaly, while numerous subsurface anomalies were encountered within the newly identified crater CEG-BC-002. According to the UFP-QAPP, this may warrant further investigation. However, analytical sampling results indicate no MC above PAL screening values and it is hypothesized that the craters may have been caused by a U.S. Navy ship in support of military operations near the island using the area for ranging or testing the guns on the ship. Since the MD and subsurface anomalies identified appeared to be piled together (which is not characteristic of a detonation site), it has been theorized that this crater was then used as a dumping area for MD collected during a range sweep or walk down. | Darren Mulkey |
