Problems/Comments
On August 13, 2015 DEC received a workplan from the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) to determine soil and air contaminant concentrations at the FAA Galena Remote Communications Air/Ground (RCAG) / Alaskan Satellite Telecommunications Infrastructure (ASTI) Building 201 in preparation for a planned building and infrastructure upgrade. The Galena land use control webmap indicates that a trichloroethylene (TCE) plume from the Galena Airport/AFS Site SS006 (Hazard ID 1955) is potentially impacting the soil and groundwater at FAA building 201. Analytical results from surface and subsurface soil samples indicate TCE is present above DEC Method Two cleanup levels at 0.688 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) in soil 0 to 2 feet below ground surface (bgs); and at 1.36 mg/kg in soil 5 to 7 feet bgs.

1/2/2020 | Institutional Control Update | DEC was courtesy copied on two Land Use Control (LUC) Notification Letters from USAF to FAA regarding FAA property in Galena: 1) A portion of the LUC areas for Site SS022 (Building 400) are located on Parcel E, currently reserved for use by the FAA from the State of Alaska. 2) A portion of the LUCs for Site SS006/SS019 are located on Block 5, Lot 2, which is currently reserved for use by FAA from the State of Alaska. Past activities have resulted in releases of solvents, as well as other contaminants, to soil and groundwater at Sites SS022 and SS006/SS019.The cleanup goal at these sites is to achieve unlimited use/unrestricted exposure (UU/UE); however, until this goal is met, LUCs have been established to protect human health. Details for the LUCs can be found in the Records of Decision (ROD) for each site. To view these documents, visit Air Force Administrative Record (AR) website (http://afcec.publicadmin-record.us.af.mil/Search.aspx) select BRAC, select Galena, and then enter the AR numbers for the RODs into the Full Metadata Search field: 568910 (Site SS022) and 576622 (Sites SS006/SS019). | Jamie McKellar |
