Problems/Comments

Campion Air Force Station (AFS) Radio Relay Station SS002 Landfill, formerly referred to as Site 6 – Waste Accumulation Area No. 1, was used for storage of liquid wastes and unused petroleum, oil, and lubricant (POL) products. The site was active from the 1950s until 1983, and spills of the stored POL reportedly occurred over the years. During site deactivation activities in 1983, much of the stained surface soils were removed from the site. SS002 is also co-located with an asbestos monofill, which was established to dispose of asbestos containing material (ACM) generated during the 1986 demolition of the housing and operations center of the former Campion AFS. The asbestos monofill was permitted by the ADEC Solid Waste Program under solid waste disposal permit (#9931 - BA006). The permit was renewed on May 13, 1999 and expired on May 1, 2004. By agreement Solid Waste is closing out its permit with the Air Force and the Site is being opened on the Contaminated Sites Program database to document Landfill Closure with Five Year reviews.
