Problems/Comments
Campion Air Force Station (AFS) RRS LF004 Landfill, formerly known as Landfill No. 1, is located at the top of a gently sloping hillside about one mile south from the former Campion AFS. The landfill was previously used for disposal of domestic refuse, wood, metal, plastic, construction materials, and shop wastes until the 1970s. It was also the location of a former unofficial rocket range. A portion of the site is currently being evaluated as a Munitions Response Site (MRS) under a Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Comprehensive Site Evaluation (CSE). See Hazard ID 26174. Munitions Response Activities (MRA) were conducted recently (June – October 2014) due to its history of containing munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) (Bay West, 2011). Munitions debris and unexploded ordnance was identified. MMRP investigations continued at the site in FY 2015. LF004 is presently a brush covered clearing in an otherwise heavily forested area. The only structure on the site is an active radio transmitter tower with a ground loop with several support structures. A chain-link perimeter fence presently controls access to the radio tower and support structures. Samples collected in September 2014 indicated Diesel Range Organics in soil above the Method Two Table B1 cleanup levels. Bis (2)-Ethylhexlphthalate and N-Nitroso-di-n-propylamine were detected in groundwater above the Method Two Table C cleanup levels. By agreement Solid Waste is closing out its permit with the Air Force and the Site is being opened on the CSP database to document Landfill Closure with Five Year reviews.

7/30/2015 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | DEC approved the Data Summary Report, Limited Site Investigation (LSI) - Sites SS002, LF004, and LF005, Campion Air Station, Alaska, July 2015. | Dennis Shepard |
8/31/2015 | Site Added to Database | A new site has been added to the database | Mitzi Read |
1/11/2016 | CERCLA Proposed Plan | DEC reviewed the proposed plan for the Landfill Sites SS002, LF004, and LF005, Campion Air Station. The plan proposes no “further remedial action (NFRA)” for Sites SS002, LF004 and LF005. The NFRA recommendation is supported by historic investigations and by a Limited Site Investigation (LSI) conducted in 2014. DEC concurs with the recommendation | Dennis Shepard |
9/26/2016 | Update or Other Action | DEC approved soil transport for the upper 12-inches of soil from the ST007 Campion landfarm and transported to non-hazardous landfills LF004 and LF005 to use as landfill cap dressing. Based upon the 2015 Campion ST007 Landfarm O&M Report, results from the most recent round of MI sampling indicate that contaminant levels in the top 12-inches of soil are below the ADEC Method Two Standards and require no further treatment. | Dennis Shepard |
