Problems/Comments

On August 13, 2015 during the removal and upgrade of piping and dispensers at the Fred Meyer gas station petroleum contaminated soil and petroleum sheens on the groundwater were discovered. Groundwater is at 3 feet below ground surface in this area. Contamination was found at multiple dispenser and piping locations. Contamination was also found at the fill pipe for the diesel tank. Most of the contaminated soil has been excavated and transported to ASR for thermal treatment.

Approximately 2,720 cubic yards of soil was excavated during field activities: 440.5 tons of soil were transported to Alaska soil recycling for treatment, 1, 024 tons were transported to Anchorage Regional Landfill for Disposal, and the remainder was transported to a private property for reuse, or reused on site as approved by the Alaska Department of Conservation (ADEC). A total of 92 analytical samples were collected from the project site at the excavation base, sidewalls, stockpiles, dispenser, and piping. Two samples exceeded the ADEC Migration to groundwater cleanup standards for Benzene of 25 ug/kg. Benzene was detected up to 38.8 ug/kg, in sample BCW taken from the excavation base. Chelsy Passmore

7/3/2017 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed a review of the environmental records associated with the Fred Meyer Fuel Stop #656 site located at 2300 Abbott Road, in Anchorage, AK. Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and no further remedial action will be required unless new information becomes available that indicates residual contaminants may pose an unacceptable risk.
