Problems/Comments
In July 2013 a leak was discovered in a fuel line to an aboveground heating oil tank. The property was purchased in 2012 and the existing underground storage tank was replaced with an aboveground storage tank at that time, but the existing fuel lines were connected to the new tank. An undetermined amount of diesel was released to the ground adjacent to the residential structure. Seasonal high groundwater events caused contaminated groundwater to flood the crawlspace. Initial remediation efforts included excavation inside and outside the crawlspace and installation of a sump pump with an oil-water separator to remove contaminated groundwater. Additionally, a sealed vapor barrier was installed in the crawlspace to mitigate contaminant vapors migrating into the structure. Contaminants remain in soil and groundwater beneath the residence.

The work plan proposes to collect two groundwater samples from two separate locations on the property. Sampling will be conducted by two ADEC QEPs. One groundwater sample will be collected from the crawlspace sump underneath the residence. The second groundwater sample will be collected from the source area sump that was installed during the initial spill response, cleanup, and characterization efforts. Groundwater samples will be analyzed for DRO, VOCs, and PAHs. Additionally, ADEC personnel will inspect the exterior property and interior residence for any visual or olfactory indications of contamination. | Julie Fix |
