DEC and EPA provided joint comments to the U.S. Air Force on the "Draft Source Evaluation Report for Multiple Sites at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska" dated January 2013. The report describes the investigation of 37 sites at Eielson that been reported or suspected of historical contaminant releases or activities that may have affected soil and water at the site. The investigation of SO071 as documented in the report includes a preliminary assessment, as well as sampling results. Sampling at the site identified benzo(a)pyrene, chromium, thalium and arsenic in soil in concentrations above DEC's Method Two cleanup levels. |

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) provided a letter dated 21 June 2013 indicating that in response to DEC's and EPA's comments made on the "Draft Final Source Evaluation Report for Multiple Sites at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska" dated April 2013, the USAF would add a table to the final version of the document that described the SER recommendation for additional action at each site and the USAF selected path forward for each site. The letter indicates the USAF will pursue a remedial investigation/feasibility study at SO071. |

CERCLA RI Plan Approved |
DEC and EPA jointly approved the final "Remedial Investigation / Feasibility Study Management Plan For Non-Operable Unit Source Areas, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska" dated September 2015 (Non-OU RI/FS MP). The Non-OU RI/FS MP describes planned remedial investigations at 17 contaminated sites at Eielson Air Force Base, including SO071. The Non-OU RI/FS MP is designed to work in concert with the Programmatic Quality Assurance Project Plan; Health and Safety Plan; and site specific Field Sampling Plans. Field work is scheduled to begin at SO071 in 2016. |

DEC approved and signed the Decision Document for Performance Based Remediation Source Areas SO065, SO069, SO070, SO071, SO073, SS084, AND TU506, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska (May 2021). Decision Document describes the remedial actions at Eielson Source Areas SO065, SO069, SO070, SO071, SO073, SS084, and TU506, all of which are associated with potential contamination resulting from petroleum, storage, distribution, and/or use. The U.S. Air Force (USAF) is managing remediation of petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) or petroleum-related
contamination at these source areas in accordance with the State-Eielson Agreement (USAF 2014e), the two-party agreement. Any Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) constituents remaining will be addressed by transferring source areas back to the Eielson Air Force Base, Federal Facility Agreement Under CERCLA Section 120 (USAF 2013a), the three-party agreement. |
