Problems/Comments

During the 2016 renovation of the Chignik Lake water distribution system, construction workers encountered contaminated soil while excavating a utility trench. An estimated 60 to 70 cubic yards of contaminated material were excavated and then backfilled into the trench and around the line. Excavation of the trench near a stream crossing necessitated dewatering activities. Sheen was observed on the shallow groundwater in the trench. After noticing the sheen, the dewatering activities continued and the sheened water was discharged onto an adjacent property (Lot 3 or 4, Block 4). The renovated water line is in the Third Street Right of Way (ROW) slightly west of the old water line's footprint. The area where contaminated soil was discovered is south of an unnamed creek that flows into Chignik River/Lake. The Third Street ROW is not developed as a road between B and D street. Screening and characterization samples of the groundwater and soil were not initially collected.
