Problems/Comments

On June 10, 2013, one soil boring was drilled west of the ADOT&PF Nenana Maintenance Station shop as part of an injection (IW) well investigation and soil samples were collected from the boring at depths of 8 feet and 11.5 feet. Review of as-built drawings revealed that the IW is farther north than the boring; therefore, soil conditions encountered in the boring are not representative of soil conditions at the presumed IW discharge location. Further work was conducted in 2016 to decommission the IW and conduct further assessment. During this activity, a second IW was discovered in-line with the piping to the original IW, and is referred to as the 'settlement tank.' This tank was not contained and was designed to settle out sediment, but also discharged directly to the subsurface. ADOT&PF is addressing this work as part of a Compliance Order with EPA.

7/12/2016 Update or Other Action Field report indicated that one IW (NE-IW-1) and a second apparent IW (settling tank, NE-IW-2) were exposed and removed in part 7/8/2016. PID readings measured up to 82 ppm in saturated soil from the IW structure and up to 113 ppm in sediment from inside the IW piping. Groundwater was observed at 3.5 feet below the ground surface (bgs) on Friday, above the level of the IW. Sheen and strong odor present in settling tank, which was not sealed and allowed groundwater to enter the tank. John Carnahan
