Problems/Comments

In 2012 the City of Palmer had a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment conducted for all seven parcels of the Mat-Maid Block property. Three of the parcels are not currently occupied (A, D, and E), the other four parcels are currently being used for commercial or industrial purposes including: office space, mechanics shop, storage, retail, and bulk fuel storage/distribution (Crowley Petroleum Distributors in Parcel G). The Phase I Environmental Site Assessment identified areas of potential contamination on each of the seven parcels based on past/current use and field observations. In 2013 under a EPA Brownfield grant, soil samples were collected from this parcel. Six surface (1 to 12 inches below ground surface) soil samples were analyzed. Chromium and arsenic were identified over default cleanup levels in most of the samples but it appears to be naturally occurring and not related to a spill. A former transformer area was non-detect for PCBs in the two samples collected from that area. Up to 240 mg/kg RRO in the four samples analyzed for petroleum. Site is part of an area-wide Brownfield assessment, file #2245.57.002.

2/21/2012 Brownfields Award This action was copied from original Hazard ID 975 and documents the approval of Brownfield funding for all seven parcels of the Matanuska Maid Block property. On this date EPA approved the City of Palmer's request for a Targeted Brownfield Assessment (TBA) of the site. The first step will be to conduct a planning meeting between EPA, its contractor, the City of Palmer, and other stakeholders. A new file to track the TBA project work has been set up, File No. 2245.57.002, entitled "Matanuska Maid Block TBA." John Carnahan
9/13/2013 Brownfields Award NTP issued on this date for a FY 2014 TBA on Matanuska Maid Block, encompassing three sites: Matanuska Maid Block Parcels A, B & D, file numbers 2245.38.018, 2245.044 and 2245.38.043.
