Problems/Comments
Surface staining was observed over a 20 by 30 foot drum storage area near the north end of the 2610 Pacific Place property. Barrel content and integrity were unknown, but there were indications that used motor oil and transmission oil had been stored at the site. Surface soil samples were taken from the drum storage area during a June 2008 site investigation of the Pruhs Industrial site (Hazard ID 4133, file no. 100.38.189) and confirmed that diesel range organics (DRO) (37,000 mg/kg), residual range organics (RRO) (176,000 mg/kg), and arsenic (4.49 mg/kg) were present in soil that exceeded DEC cleanup levels. The level of arsenic is considered naturally occurring and falls within the range considered background for the area. Samples were also analyzed for gasoline range organcs (GRO), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) but no exceedances were observed in these tests. In October 2011, 92.37 tons of soil were excavated from the stained area surface to the smear zone (estimated to be 6 feet below ground surface) and transported to Oil Incineration Technologies for thermal treatment. Eight soil samples taken from the sides and bottom of the excavation did not exceed cleanup levels for any tested analytes (DRO, GRO, RRO, BTEX, PAH). Clean fill was used to fill the excavation. No additional work is required for this source area.
