Problems/Comments
A historic cache of 55-gallon drums dating from 1940's and 1950's were discovered in a 2011 survey of the Sage Hill area. They may have previously been used to store a variety of materials (oil, pesticides, tetrachloroethylene, etc.). Fifty-two drums were removed, and it is unclear whether any drums remain at the site. No odor or staining was observed around or under any drums. Based on field screening results, only surface soil samples (not subsurface soil samples) were collected. Soil and surface water samples were analyzed for gasoline range organics, diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, herbicides, and pesticides. Soil samples were analyzed for RCRA metals. Concentrations for DRO (2,500 mg/kg) and RRO (2,100 mg/kg) in soil samples exceeded migration-to-groundwater cleanup levels. Multiple metals were detected at 1/10th their respective human health risk soil cleanup levels. The analysis of the surface water samples was inconclusive. Further investigation of surface water is needed. Potential receptors include site visitors and workers.
