Problems/Comments
Former Tank 903 (ADEC Tank Number 243) was a regulated 1,000-gallon, double-walled used oil tank located on the east side of Building 3490, south of Chippewa Avenue on Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Historically, Building 3490 was used for vehicle maintenance and storage. The underground storage tank (UST) was removed on September 24, 2013. Prior to tank removal, the contents were pumped out and properly disposed of. The final dimensions of the tank excavation was approximately 20 feet long, 12 feet wide and 12 feet deep. No stains or odors were observed from the excavation. Six primary soil confirmation samples and one duplicate sample were collected from the base and sidewalls. Confirmation samples indicated the presence of arsenic and chloroform above DEC cleanup levels. Arsenic concentrations were within the background levels established in the background metals study in 1994. The chloroform concentrations were attributed to laboratory cross-contamination. Based on the fact the only potential contaminants of concern at the site were either within background, or due to laboratory cross-contamination, no cumulative risk evaluation was conducted for this site. Diesel range organics (DRO) and residual range organics (RRO) were detected but below ADEC cleanup levels. Building 3490 is located within an industrial part of Fort Wainwright, and future site use is expected to remain the same as the current site use.

11/12/2020 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | ADEC approved the Final Environmental Summary Report: Building 3490 UST Removal Site (dated November 10, 2020). The document summarized all historical work conducted at the Building 3490 site. Results from the 2013 underground storage tank (UST) removal action were discussed. Six samples and one duplicate sample were collected from the UST excavation site. Results indicated diesel range organics (DRO) and residual range organics (RRO) were detected but below ADEC cleanup levels (CULs). Chloroform and arsenic were the only analytes to be detected above ADEC CULs. The chloroform detections were a result of laboratory cross-contamination, and the arsenic result is considered within background concentrations for Fort Wainwright. | Erica Blake |
11/12/2020 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | ADEC issued a cleanup complete determination for the Building 3490 Underground Storage Tank (UST) 243 site. Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and no further remedial action will be required unless new information becomes available that indicates residual contaminants may pose an unacceptable risk. | Erica Blake |
11/13/2020 | Institutional Control Record Removed | Institutional Controls have been removed. | Erica Blake |
