Problems/Comments

DEC has received multiple complaints (2014-0031, 2014-R0102, 2017-R0534) regarding the environmental impacts of a historical salvage yard and dump at Seaford Subdivision, Block 4, Lot 20B (a/k/a Seaford's Salvage Yard and Seaford's Pit) in Thorne Bay. Reportedly the site was once a gravel pit that was later filled in with numerous vehicles and other solid waste, hazardous materials, batteries, petroleum products, and possibly raw sewage from on-site residents. Some of the waste may have been covered with rock and/or soil, and contaminants may be migrating beyond the property boundaries and potentially impacting adjacent land and nearby surface water. A site visit was conducted by Thorne Bay public safety personnel in May 2017 and confirmed the presence of buried vehicles, hazardous materials, drums, batteries, a gas cylinder, numerous fuel containers and areas of stained soil. Stressed vegetation and a deceased ecological receptor were also documented. Analytical samples have not yet been collected.
