Problems/Comments
Petroleum contamination was encountered in soil at concentrations above the cleanup level during a Phase II site assessment at the former North Slope Borough (NSB) SA-10 water and wastewater treatment plant. The sources of contamination appear to be a former fuel pipeline and releases to the interior of the building that migrated through cracks in the slab to the gravel pad below.

6/20/2017 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Reviewed Phase II Site Assessment for former NSB WWTP. The objective of the Phase II was to evaluate the recognized environmental conditions documented in a Phase I report at the former WWTP, specifically areas of petroleum contamination at the southwest corner of the property and former incinerating and tipping areas, the location of former ASTs near the new WWTP, areas of damage to the concrete slab, and accumulated incinerator ash that had collected in the interior of the building. Additional investigation was conducted in the former tank farm area that was not covered by the new WWTP, along an underground pipeline from the former tank farm to the former WWTP, and along the northern edge of the pad where DRO was detected in surface water. These last three areas are specific to a separate site, the NSB Deadhorse New Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant. Information on that site can be found in File #300.38.309 At the Former WWTP, 20 soil borings were advanced and sampled in the areas of concern noted above. Sample results indicated an area of petroleum contamination located primarily underneath the building. DRO was detected up to 4,520 mg/kg and GRO was detected up to 373 mg/kg. Xylenes and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene were also detected above cleanup levels. Previous samples of the incinerator ash indicated exceedances of the TCLP limits for cadmium, lead, and mercury. | Bill O'Connell |
