Problems/Comments
Concern over the use of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) as a fire retardant in the Barrow (Utqiagvik) community led to the sampling of Isatkoak Reservoir, the drinking water source for the community. Multiple surface water samples were collected across the extent of the reservoir, with the greatest concentration repeatedly detected at a collection point near the eastern end of the runway, where the airstrip meets the western edge of the reservoir. Two surface water samples collected one month apart from this location, yielded water concentrations significantly elevated above other samples, indicating that a source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination is likely on the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) Airport property.
