Problems/Comments

This database record includes general information about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination at Clear Air Force Station (Clear AFS). PFAS are a diverse group of compounds that have been used in many industrial applications and consumer products including fire-fighting foams. Ongoing investigations are gathering information to determine the location of PFAS-contaminated sites on Clear AFS. Upon completion of the investigations, specific areas may be assigned individual Hazard IDs and tracked separately. Please see site-specific database entries to learn more about an individual Clear AFS PFAS-contaminated sites.

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
3/14/2018 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other REPORT RECEIVED 3/14/2018: Final Site Inspection Report for Aqueous Film Forming Foam Areas. Prepared by CH2M Hill, Inc. Dated March 2018. DEC Approval letter sent on 3/16/2018. Jamie McKellar
3/21/2018 Site Added to Database A new site has been added to the database Mitzi Read
5/29/2018 Update or Other Action 5/29/2018: New project manager assigned. Jamie McKellar
10/4/2018 Update or Other Action PFAS Notification Letter and Tech Memo sent to USAF for Clear Air Station. This tech memo is applicable to Clear Air Force Station because per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination has been identified in soil and groundwater. The tech memo sets forth requirements for sampling method & frequency and rules concerning treatment of water prior to discharge. Jamie McKellar
6/12/2019 Update or Other Action Uploaded summary results for the primary drinking water wells at Clear Air Force Station. Samples were collected in November 2016 by USAF's Bioenvironmental Office. There are no associated work plans or reports for these results. DEC received a copy of the results from USAF on May 22, 2019. Click on the Documents tab to view results. Jamie McKellar
9/10/2021 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other On 6/29/2021, DEC reviewed a temporary water use agreement (TWUA) associated with planned construction of two water wells located within 1/4-mile of two undelineated PFAS sites with concentrations exceeding the applicable 18 AAC 75 Table C cleanup levels for PFOS and/or PFOA: AFFF Area #4 and AFFF Area #5. Preliminary results for the Fire Water Well, located approximately 1/4-mile northwest of AFFF Area #5 and slightly less than 1/2-mile north-northwest of AFFF Area #4 did not exceed the promulgated cleanup levels for PFOS or PFOA. DEC advised USAF that if additional cleanup levels are promulgated in the future, USAF may have to complete additional site characterization activities and evaluate whether the Fire Water well can be used. USAF may also need to evaluate soil in areas where dewatering associated with the Fire Water Well was conducted. Preliminary results for the Construction Water Well, located approximately 600 feet west of AFFF Area #4 slightly exceed the PFOS+PFOA Action Level (0.07 ug/L), established in DEC's PFAS Tech Memo, with a concentration of 0.074 ug/L.
