Problems/Comments

The Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (MALSR) on runway 33 of Cold Bay's airport consists of five flashing Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (RAIL), seven steady-burning Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System (MALS) and a control building. In 2015, lead soil sampling was conducted in accordance with the "Soil Baseline Sampling Guide for Facilities Scheduled for Decommissioning/Disposition with Suspected Lead-Based Paint" (FAA, 2016). Lead was present only in surface soil by lead-based paint chips. Subsurface soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment and biota were not impacted media.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
7/2/2018 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC approved the Federal Aviation Administration Cold Bay MALSR Demolition and Remedial Action Work Plan, Cold Bay, Alaska, dated June 2018. The document describes the Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System With Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (MALSR) demolition and remedial action project on runway 32 at Cold Bay’s airport in Cold Bay, Alaska. Lead is the primary contaminant of concern at this site. A portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer will be used to field screen soil for lead contamination. Confirmation analytical soil samples will be collected when field screening results are below the action level of 200 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). Analytical soil results for lead will be compared to DEC’s Human Health Under 40-inch Zone cleanup level of 400 mg/kg. Erica Blake
