Problems/Comments
In August 2018, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) unearthed the historical injection well that serviced the existing Maintenance Facility, also known as the 'Old Shop.' Liquid samples were collected from within the 5X5X5 wooden crib, and soil samples were collected from the excavated area. Soil was stockpiled onsite pending analyses.
Analytical results from site characterization and closure activities indicate that contamination from GK-IW-1 remains below the former IW at 9.5 feet bgs and at the north limit of excavation from ground surface to 7.5 feet bgs. In addition, 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene was detected at a level exceeding ADEC MTGW CULs beneath the exterior piping leading to the IW, at approximately 38 feet from the Old Shop. RRO, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, 1,3-dichlorobenzene, and metals were also detected in this sample at concentrations below ADEC CULs.
Soil from the vicinity of that sample was removed from the excavation and stockpiled on the liner. DRO contamination above MTGW cleanup levels remains below the IW at the groundwater interface, therefore it is possible that groundwater has been impacted. We believe the risk to offsite receptors is low due to the discontinuous nature of groundwater in the area and the lack of use of GW as a drinking water source in the area. The nearest well is located over 1,000 feet to the south and is reportedly used for hangar operations only. The water in the area is brought in from an outside source due to poor on-site water quality from high mineral content. We believe that the surface contamination found north of the IW is from another source. One heating-oil UST and one 3,000-gallon diesel AST located are approximately 50 feet southwest and 54 feet southeast, respectively, from the isolated area of contamination; it is unclear if the contamination is related to either tank.
