We make every effort to ensure the data presented here is accurate based on the best available information currently on file with DEC. It is therefore subject to change as new information becomes available. We recommend contacting the assigned project staff prior to making decisions based on this information.
Problems/Comments
In spring 2017 and summer 2018 limited environmental investigations were conducted on Lot 44 in Atka in preparation for construction of a new city health clinic. The 0.43-acre lot (Lot 44) is southwest of the new city office building on Atxax Way. There was previously a World War II era Quonset hut on the property that has since been removed. It was purported that the village previously used the Quonset hut to store 55-gallon drums of gasoline for a short period of time. Since the removal of the Quonset hut fill material has been spread across the site obscuring the original ground surface. Soil sample analysis indicate diesel range organics; naphthalene; 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene; and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene were present in soil above a DEC cleanup levels. Gasoline range organics, residual range organics, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and lead were also confirmed to be present in soil, but were below DEC cleanup levels.

The Limited Soil Investigation Report (August 10, 2018 - Bethel) indicates DRO and trimethylbenzene contamination just above migration to groundwater between 4 and 6 feet bgs. The building is built on post on footing construction and at least 2 feet above the ground surface. The building will be wrapped with a vapor barrier during construction eliminating and inhalation exposure. Drinking water for the entire city is provided by surface water up-gradient from this site. No further action is anticipated at this site. |
