Problems/Comments
In September 2012, Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) consultants drilled a soil boring through the slab of the garage near the presumed location of the one onsite sub-slab concrete block injection well and collected one soil sample from about 10 feet below grade. Multiple polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) analytes were detected in the sample at concentrations greater than DEC soil cleanup levels, and the levels of detection for several volatile organic compound (VOC), semi-volatile organic compound (SVOC), and PAH analytes exceeded their respective cleanup levels. ADOT&PF returned to the site in October 2018 to decommission the injection well system in accordance with their EPA-approved work plan. ADOT&PF also rerouted the current injection well to a newly constructed collection system to eliminate discharge. Coordination with the Underground Storage Tank Program was necessary due to the presence of a buried waste oil collection tank.

10/16/2018 | Update or Other Action | Update from field that contamination has been identified and photographs of open injection well sent to DEC. | John Carnahan |
10/16/2018 | Leaking Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Initiated - Petroleum | UST removal actions planned at Tazlina and closure form submitted to UST Program. | John Carnahan |
12/7/2018 | Update or Other Action | Email from DOT regarding contamination found at the Tazlina Maintenance Station from the use of injection well TZ-IW-1. Approximately 1,900 gallons of injection well, sump, and piping contents were removed from the IW system. In addition, approximately 35 cubic yards of soil was removed from around the injection well. Contamination was removed to the extent possible and groundwater was not encountered. | John Carnahan |
12/10/2018 | Site Added to Database | A new site has been added to the database | Mitzi Read |
1/21/2019 | Update or Other Action | Draft of Site Characterization report submitted to DEC. | John Carnahan |
2/14/2019 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | DEC provides review comments on Site Characterization reporting. In general, the site was contaminated, gross contamination removed but not fully delineated, a new garage drain system was installed, and further assessment planned. | John Carnahan |
6/13/2019 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | Meeting held with ADOT&PF, ADEC, and Shannon and Wilson do discuss site scoping and work prioritization for the next year. | Michael Hooper |
9/26/2019 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Approved 2019 Workplan Addendum for site characterization to include VI sampling, drinking water sampling and soil characterization through borings. | Michael Hooper |
12/5/2019 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | Meeting held with ADOT and Shannon & Wilson to discuss 2019 sampling season and plans for 2020. | Michael Hooper |
12/7/2020 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Reviewed SC report and provided comments via email. | Michael Hooper |
10/28/2021 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | Annual meeting held with DOT Northern Region and contractors to discuss previous field season and plans for the next year. | Michael Hooper |
1/12/2022 | Site Characterization Workplan Approved | Approved workplan for additional air sampling in winter followed up by installation of a monitoring well down gradient from the removed IW in Summer. | Michael Hooper |
12/30/2022 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Approved 2022 Site characterization report. The report recommends discontinuing air monitoring as residual contamination from TZ-IW-1 does not appear to be a significant contributor to observed contaminants in indoor air. Another round of groundwater sampling is recommended to confirm that groundwater has not been impacted. ADEC agrees with these recommendations. | Michael Hooper |
7/11/2023 | Site Characterization Workplan Approved | Approved workplan for collection of one groundwater sample. If contamination is not found DOT&PF can decommission the monitoring well. | Michael Hooper |
1/9/2024 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Reviewed workplan for groundwater monitoring and recommended that DOT&PF move forward with decommissioning monitoring wells. DEC will evaluate this site for closure. | Michael Hooper |
1/17/2024 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | Annual Meeting Held with DOT to discuss plans for coming year at all NR UIC sites. | Michael Hooper |
