Problems/Comments
In 2007 a 1,000-gallon underground storage tank (UST) used for heating was removed immediately east of Building 6136 in response to report that 20 gallons of heating oil was added to the UST during periodic fueling, despite the fact that the associated furnace was non-operational. All field-screening heated headspace samples during UST excavation activities were 0.0 ppm. After UST removal, one soil sample was collected from each sidewall and two from the excavation bottom beneath the UST. Benzene was detected at a level of 0.064 mg/kg in one soil sample collected at the bottom of the excavation on the UST’s vent side. Analytical results of the remaining soil samples did not exceed DEC soil cleanup levels (CLs). In 2012, with the exception of benzo(a)pyrene, semi-volatile organic compounds in concentrations exceeding DEC CLs were detected only in surface soils located off the southwest corner Building 6136 and in the middle of the former UST excavation footprint to the east of Building 6136. Benzo(a)pyrene was detected above the DEC CL in subsurface soil located off the southwest corner Building 6136. Benzene was not detected soil collected immediately east of the sample that was previously collected at the bottom of the excavation on the UST’s vent side in 2007. There does not appear to be any residual contamination at concentrations exceeding DEC CLs associated with the former presence and removal of the UST. In both surface and subsurface soils, only metals (arsenic, chromium, cobalt, iron, manganese, and molybdenum) were detected at concentrations above their corresponding CLs. Groundwater quality was not assessed because direct push services refusal occurred above the water table.

Any CERCLA contaminants will be addressed under CERCLA regulatory program in accordance with the Eielson Air Force Base, Federal Facilities Agreement. | Dennis Shepard |
2/9/2022 | Update or Other Action | DEC approved and signed the Decision Document for Performance Based Remediation Source Areas SO065, SO069, SO070, SO071, SO073, SS084, AND TU506, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska (May 2021). Decision Document describes the remedial actions at Eielson Source Areas SO065, SO069, SO070, SO071, SO073, SS084, and TU506, all of which are associated with potential contamination resulting from petroleum, storage, distribution, and/or use. The U.S. Air Force (USAF) is managing remediation of petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) or petroleum-related contamination at these source areas in accordance with the State-Eielson Agreement (USAF 2014e), the two-party agreement. Any Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) constituents remaining will be addressed by transferring source areas back to the Eielson Air Force Base, Federal Facility Agreement Under CERCLA Section 120 (USAF 2013a), the three-party agreement. | Dennis Shepard |
