Problems/Comments
In June 2019, two injection wells were removed at the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) Chitina Maintenance Station.
One of the injection wells was associated with the floor drains in the Old M&O Shop and was found approximately 74 feet from the northeast corner of the shop. It was comprised of a 6.4-foot section of 8-inch perforated metal culvert at a depth of 5.5 to 6 feet below ground surface (bgs). Below the culvert was a wooden crib approximately 8 feet by 10 feet wide and between 6 feet to 8 feet deep. Staining was not observed at the base of the excavation, but a very faint hydrocarbon odor was noted. Field screen readings were not above 20 parts per million. The excavation side walls exhibited no staining, odors, or elevated field screen readings. Analytical results confirmed the presence of diesel range organics (DRO) at 1,100 mg/kg,above DEC cleanup levels, at the base of the injection well. Arsenic was also confirmed above cleanup levels, but may be within background. This injection well is in close proximity to the former fueling station, (Hazard ID 24623 / File Number 2211.26.001). The former fueling station contaminated site was closed with DRO contamination remaining in place.
The second injection well was associated with the single floor drain in the Old M&O Shop Addition. It was found approximately 55.5 feet from the south wall of the Shop Addition and was comprised of a 20-foot section of 24” culvert, laying horizontal and perforated along the bottom. The portion of culvert where exterior piping entered
was approximately 10-feet bgs at the base and sloped down to 12-feet bgs at the end of the culvert. No staining, odors, or elevated field screen readings were encountered. Analytical samples at the limits of excavation indicated arsenic to be the only contaminant above DEC cleanup levels, and it may be consistent with background levels.
This site includes spill no. 19229922001. Spill date = 8/8/2019; substance = unknown; quantity = unknown, description: Removal of piping, injection well, impacted soil, and debris related to historical injection well from highway maintenance station floor drain system.
