Problems/Comments
Fort Wainwright Building 3479 (B3479) has historically been used as a vehicle maintenance shop, and the parking lot has been used to stage and park various military vehicles. Used oil underground storage tanks (USTs) have been present in the past at this site and within the vicinity of the current investigation area. The USTs have been removed (See DEC File Number 108.26.022 (Hazard IDs 24183 and 1096) for information on the USTs). On 19 May 2017, dark colored water was found ponding against the foundation wall of B3479 during excavation activities with no obvious smell or sheen. The water was localized to a 6-foot section of the wall, bounded by two reinforced concrete walls in the subsurface extending perpendicular from the main building. The water level in this section was higher than the expected level of groundwater and water did not pond along any other sections of the foundation wall. Water samples (one primary and one duplicate) were collected from the ponded water. Approximately 10 to 20 cubic yards of gravel were stockpiled adjacent to the excavation. One primary characterization and one field duplicate sample were collected from the stockpiled gravel. One characterization sample was collected from the sediment below the ponded water and another from the sidewall of the excavation. Samples were submitted for the following laboratory analyses: gasoline range organics (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Low-level VOCs, semi-volatile compounds (SVOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Metals, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Contaminants of potential concern (COPCs) identified are; DRO, RRO, barium, cadmium, lead, mercury, selenium, and naphthalene (for soil); DRO, lead, mercury, 1,2,3-trichloropropane, 1,2-dibromoethane, naphthalene, and PCBs (for surface water). Further investigation of contamination extent, and determining whether groundwater in the area has been impacted is needed.
The corresponding Army HQAES site number is: 02871.1067.
