Problems/Comments
The National Petroleum Reserve Alaska (NPRA) is a 23 million acre area 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Oil exploration activities within the NPRA included the installation of 136 wells and boreholes between 1944 and 1981 by the U.S. Navy and the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Well sites identified as requiring cleanup are tracked individually under separate Hazard IDs.
At South Barrow #3, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected at a concentration exceeding the cleanup criteria at the power plant area. Three additional PCB detections were reported at lower levels in the samples closer to the well - in one discrete sample northwest of the well and two composite samples surrounding the well. Further investigation and delineation of PCBs is recommended at this site. Buried debris was observed at two locations on site and a possible petroleum sheen was observed at the base of a berm where two half-buried drums were removed. It is recommended that the extent and nature of buried debris be further investigated.
