Problems/Comments

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) former community services facility (COMSERFAC) building was located in the Main Facility Area at the King Salmon Airport. In 1998 a 1,000-gallon heating oil underground storage tank (UST 3-N-1) was decommissioned and replaced with a 515-gallon aboveground storage tank (AST) and approximately 18 cubic yards of petroleum-contaminated soil were excavated (diesel range organics (DRO) 433 mg/kg). The building was decommissioned in 2005. The 2012 Release Investigation (RI) delineated the petroleum-contaminated area using ultra-violet optical screening tool (UVOST) and sampling. Sample results showed diesel range organics (DRO 16,000 mg/kg), 1-methylnaphthalene (6,500 mg/kg), 2-methylnaphthalene (11,000m g/kg), and naphthalene (0.25 mg/kg) above cleanup levels in soil. DRO (74 mg/L), 1-methylnaphthalene (0.039 mg/L), 2-methylnaphthalene (0.036 mg/L), and naphthalene (0.0065 mg/L) were above cleanup levels in groundwater. In 2017 over 25 cubic yards of petroleum-contaminated soil and an unregistered 500-gallon single walled steel UST were removed. Confirmation soil samples taken after soil removal showed DRO (6,700 mg/kg), naphthalene (210 ug/kg), 1-methylnaphthalene (630 mg/kg) above ADEC cleanup levels in soil. DRO (5 mg/L), 1-methylnaphthalene (39 ug/L), 2-methylnaphthalene (36 ug/L), and naphthalene (20 ug/L) were above cleanup levels in groundwater.
