Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) King Salman Former Utility Building 200 was a shop building located in the Former Housing Area. A 500-gallon heating oil underground storage tank (UST 3-I-4) at the southeast corner of the building was decommissioned in 1998 and 12 cubic yards of petroleum contaminated soil were removed. Subsequent sampling showed that diesel range organics (DRO) remained in soil (up to 2,480 mg/kg). However, the extent of soil contamination could not be fully delineated due to the presence of the building and an aboveground storage tank (AST) that prevented access to the contaminated locations identified during the UST removal. Two groundwater monitoring wells were installed and it was determined that groundwater was not impacted above ADEC cleanup levels. In 2010 the building was decommissioned, allowing the area near the former UST to be fully investigated. DRO (4,000 mg/kg) and naphthalene (0.096 mg/kg) were found, but are believed to be contamination from the drain discharge pipe at Building 301. All groundwater results were below cleanup levels. In 2017 subsurface soil samples were collected and sampled for Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) metals and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). All results were below cleanup levels, except for arsenic (5.5 mg/kg) and total chromium (16 mg/kg), but both are well within naturally occurring concentrations typically found in Alaska.
