Problems/Comments

Multiple areas of concern are located within the former Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) main complex area at Moses Point. As of May 15, 2019 this Hazard ID (27088) will track the actions of all source areas located at the former main complex including the Fuel Storage Area (Hazard ID 803), Maint./Vehicle Fac. (Hazard ID 804), and Septic/Sewage Fac. (Hazard ID 805), but were previously tracked with separate Hazard IDs. Significant petroleum contamination is present in soils and groundwater at the main complex area from historical uses including housing, vehicle maintenance, and fuel storage. The facility is no longer operational.

Work Plan details the continuation of site characterization of contaminated soil and groundwater at the former FAA station. Areas of concern to be investigation are the former Low/Medium Frequency Loop Radio Range, area along the main road from Iron Creek to VOR access road, former Building 603, former Building 204, former Building 301 and former Fuel Storage Facility. Bulk soil and groundwater samples will also be collected to complete bench-scale testing for evaluating potential future in-situ treatment options. Kelly Walker

1/13/2023 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC completed review of Report, FAA Environmental Investigation for the former FAA Moses Point Station. This report details the groundwater and soil sampling to further delineate chlorinated solvents in groundwater and soils in the Main Complex area of the former station. A geophysical investigation was also conducted to evaluate the presence of buried debris along the main road and near former Building 603. Soils were also collected to complete bench scale testing to evaluate potential in-situ remediation methods. Data gaps remain and additional investigation is needed to fully delineate chlorinated solvents in groundwater and soils at the former FAA Moses Point station. Kelly Walker
4/1/2025 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC has reviewed and approved the "Work Plan, Feasibility Study" for the former FAA Moses Point Station. This work plan details the additional delineation of groundwater and soil contamination at the site, as well as evaluation of pre-and post-treatment concentrations of contaminants within the in-situ pilot treatment study area. This study will assess the applicability of smoldering for treatment of contamination at the site. Kelly Walker
