Problems/Comments

Starting in the 1990s, the property was operated as Jumping Salmon Lodge. The original operation consisted of a boat shop and cabin. As of 2019, the property had a boat shop, cabins, lodge, employee housing, bulk fuel storage, and floating dock. A phase one environmental site assessment (ESA) was conducted in October 2017. The ESA documented historic petroleum releases to the surface soil from bulk fuel storage and miscellaneous petroleum storage. Contamination may have migrated into the subsurface soil, groundwater, sediment, and surface waters. Site characterization results from 2020 show DRO and RRO contamination in soils. DRO results ranged from 277-1,790 mg/kg. RRO results ranged from 101-10,200 mg/kg. Lead was detected in soils near Cabin 2, ranging in concentration from 329 mg/kg to 932 mg/kg. The source of lead contamination is flaking lead-based paint from nearby Cabin 2. Further work is planned for the 2022 field season.

Hazardous building inventory indicates minimal lead paint is present in windows of cabin 2 and 3. No friable asbestos is present. Soil samples indicate DRO above ADEC migration to groundwater cleanup levels in two main areas. All samples are below human health cleanup levels. Next step for site is to complete characterization of the DRO in surface soil. ADEC encourages Chenega to apply for funding to complete the characterization. Possible funding options could be DBAC or TBA. Erin Gleason

3/8/2022 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Review completed for Work Plan, Jumping Salmon Lodge, 2022 Site Characterization Activities and comments provided. Document details the continued delineation of contaminated soils associated with past activities at Jumping Salmon Lodge. Contamination appears primarily associated with aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) and lead based paint chips. Kelly Walker
9/27/2022 Site Visit Site visit completed with DEC and its contractor to the Jumping Salmon Lodge site Sept. 27-30. DEC staff observed surface soil, surface water, and porewater sample collection to further delineate soil contamination throughout the property. Kelly Walker
3/31/2023 Site Characterization Report Approved Site Characterization Report review completed and approved. Surface soils and porewater samples were collected. Soil samples were analyzed with and without silica gel cleanup extraction method, with results indicating diesel range organics (DRO) concentrations are below migration to groundwater cleanup levels throughout the property. Porewater results are considered qualitative due to low recharge at the sampling point, results indicate concentrations of DRO, naphthalene and lead above Table C groundwater cleanup levels. Lead was detected in surface soils surrounding Cabin 2 and this area is considered delineated. Additional field sampling will occur in fall of 2023 for additional porewater sampling. Kelly Walker
5/8/2023 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 80493 Jumping Salmon Lodge. Kelly Walker
8/23/2023 Site Characterization Workplan Approved DEC reviewed and approved the Work Plan, Jumping Salmon Lodge, 2023 Groundwater Sampling.
