Problems/Comments
Concern over the use of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) as a fire retardant at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (AIA) has resulted in preliminary investigative sampling performed for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). As of September 2019 data indicate PFAS contamination is present at the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Building (also known as the Police and Fire Building or Safety Building). Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was reported at 23,000 parts per trillion (ppt) in shallow groundwater, 6,600 ppt in surface water, and 0.18 milligram per kilogram in soil.

| 9/18/2019 | Site Added to Database | A new site has been added to the database | Mitzi Read |
| 9/19/2019 | Potentially Responsible Party/State Interest Letter | Potentially Responsible Party / State Interest letter sent to Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities | Wendy Hansen |
| 12/23/2019 | Workplan Requested | Staff sent request for Site Characterization Work Plan, with due date of June 1, 2020. | Wendy Hansen |
| 7/16/2020 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | A workplan was submitted on this date for additional characterization of the Postmark Bog soil and groundwater due to the presence of petroleum and PFAS in these soils. The soil consists of wet peaty materials that would need to be removed for most development activities. The Postmark Bog is close to the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Building, and may be affected by releases from this site. DEC provided comments to the work plan on 7/27/20. | Janice Wiegers |
| 10/30/2020 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | DEC received the Draft Postmark Bog Development PFAS Investigation report on 9/22/2020 from DOT, and responded with minor comments on 10/30/2020. | Janice Wiegers |
| 1/6/2022 | Workplan Requested | DEC sent a letter requesting a site characterization work plan with a deadline of June 1, 2022 for field work to be performed in the 2022 field season. | Robert Burgess |
| 1/25/2022 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | CRW/RSE submitted final Postmark Bog Development PFAS Investigation Report, dated 12/21/2020. PFAS and petroleum hydrocarbons exceeded DEC cleanup levels. PFAS sample data showed PFOA and PFOS impacts among the peat soil throughout the planned Postmark Bog Development area. PFOS was observed more frequently than PFOA; RSE cited literature indicating PFOS sorbs more readily than PFOA in organic soils such as peat. The highest levels of PFOS (0.363 mg/kg in T1-39A) and PFOA (0.0268 mg/kg in T1-39A) were found along the southern edge of the investigation area near the middle of the bog area west of Postmark Drive. Petroleum hydrocarbons were also widespread with the highest levels of DRO (1,700 mg/kg) in T1-11A, and RRO (17,000 mg/kg) in T1-03A. Petroleum hydrocarbons exceeded DEC's Table B2 ingestion or inhalation levels. | Janice Wiegers |
| 10/4/2022 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | DEC provided comments to the site characterization work plan describing sampling of multiple borings and groundwater wells around the ARFF building and adjacent postmark bog. | Robert Burgess |
| 11/23/2022 | Site Characterization Workplan Approved | DEC approved the site characterization work plan. The plan describes sampling of soil, groundwater, and surface water around Postmark Bog. | Robert Burgess |
