Problems/Comments

On August 3, 2019 approximately 150 gallons of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel were released from a vent line of an underground storage tank (UST #6) when a fuel delivery was inadvertently pumped into the interstitial space connection of the 10,000-gallon tank. The vent line is located adjacent to the east wall and through the soffit and roof of the Valdez Best Western Harbor Inn. Fuel spilled out of the vent, through the soffit, down the wall, and onto the ground, including a two-inch wide strip of soil next to a paved fire lane adjacent to the building and above the Valdez Small Boat Harbor seawall. Some of the fuel migrated to the Small Boat Harbor. Initial response efforts included the use of booms and absorbents, as well as the removal of approximately 100 cubic yards of contaminated soil. Excavation was limited due to infrastructure and utilities. Contamination remains above DEC cleanup levels beneath the building foundation and at the seawall adjacent to utilities and infrastructure.
