Problems/Comments
In July 2019 a 6,000-gallon, two-compartment, gasoline and diesel underground storage tank (UST #3) was removed from the ground at the Mentasta Lodge. The operation included lodging facilities, restaurant and bar, gas station, and general store, but became inactive prior to the 2019 summer season. Petroleum contaminated soil was confirmed during the tank removal activities and the release was thought to be from a connection beneath the fuel dispenser. Analysis of samples taken from the tank excavation confirm 1-methylnaphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, benzene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and naphthalene remain in soil above DEC cleanup levels. Further site characterization is needed to determine if contamination has migrated to the groundwater or is affecting the on-site drinking water well. Previously, in 1998, two USTs (#1 & #2) were decommissioned and removed from this site. During that action petroleum contamination was encountered and approximately 175 cubic yards of soil were removed and placed in a landfarm. It is unclear if the landfarm soils are still on site. Information regarding USTs 1 &2 is tracked under Hazard ID 24778, File No. 210.26.002, Mentasta Lodge USTs 1 & 2.

6/19/2020 | Potentially Responsible Party/State Interest Letter | PRP letter was sent to RP March 2020. | Kelly Walker |
6/23/2020 | Update or Other Action | Corrective action letter sent to RP. Letter detailed what corrective actions are required after the removal of the leaking tank. Corrective action plan will be written and provided to DEC. Plan will address the need for further delineation of the extent of soil and groundwater contamination at the property, provide a plan for cleanup and for properly managing contaminated soils. | Kelly Walker |
10/12/2020 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | DEC reviewed the Site Assessment and Release Investigation Work Plan for Mentasta Lodge UST 3. Plan detailed the groundwater and soil sampling planned for the site. The drinking water well on site will also be sampled. DEC provided detailed comments to RP. | Kelly Walker |
11/9/2021 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Comment responses completed for draft Site Assessment and Release Investigation Report for UST #3. Report details the release investigation activities conducted at the location of the former UST #3, removed in 2019. | Kelly Walker |
3/10/2022 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Site Assessment and Release Investigation Report approved. Report details site characterization of vertical and lateral extent of contamination associated with former UST 3 and to determine if contamination had impacted on-site drinking water well. Results indicated contamination remains above ADEC's Method Two Migration to Groundwater Soil Cleanup Levels. Groundwater was not investigated during this field work. | Kelly Walker |
3/31/2022 | Leaking Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Initiated - Petroleum | Action addition for grant tracking purposes. | Evonne Reese |
8/1/2022 | Site Characterization Workplan Approved | Additional Site Characterization Monitoring Work Plan reviewed and approved for the Mentasta Lodge UST 3 site. Up to five soil borings and one monitoring well will be installed during the 2022 field season to further delineate the concentrations of contaminants above ADEC Method Two Soil Cleanup Levels. | Kelly Walker |
8/1/2023 | Site Characterization Report Approved | DEC reviewed and approved the Mentasta Lodge UST 3 Additional Site Characterization report. This report detailed the advancement of soil borings and the installation of 3 monitoring wells at the site to evaluate if groundwater is impacted and to further delineate the soil contamination from the former underground storage tank. No contaminants were detected in groundwater at the site. Additional delineation of soil contamination is needed to the east and west of the original excavation area. | Kelly Walker |
