Problems/Comments
In June 2020, petroleum-contaminated soil was encountered during closure activities for two 5,000-gallon underground storage tanks (USTs #155 and #166) at Building 3015, Directorate of Public Works, on Fort Wainwright. UST #155 (owner ID 264A) was a 5,000-gallon diesel tank and UST #166 (owner ID 265A) was a 5,000-gallon gasoline tank, both of which were part of a fueling station north of the building. A field investigation in 2020 included advancing nine boreholes, and one temporary well point. Soil and groundwater samples were analyzed for gasoline range organics (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). A groundwater sample was unable to be collected from the source area because of a concrete slab obstruction. Additional work is needed to investigate the groundwater pathway.

9/9/2020 | Underground Storage Tank Site Characterization or Assessment | ADEC approved the Final FTW Department of Public Works UST Release Investigation Work Plan, Fort Wainwright, Alaska (Revised September 8, 2020, version 3). The document describes proposed activities for the Underground Storage Tanks (UST) release investigation at the Building 3015 site on Fort Wainwright, Alaska (FWA). The proposed work includes drilling up to 14 soil borings and one temporary well point to assess the subsurface conditions and delineate the extent of contamination associated with the June 2020 UST tank removal and closure work. This work is expected to occur September 2020. | Erica Blake |

Nine soil borings were drilled, and one temporary well point was installed. Soil and groundwater samples collected were analyzed for gasoline range organics (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). ADEC agreed with the recommendation that additional work is needed at this site. The extent of potential groundwater contamination needs to be investigated further. | Erica Blake |
