Problems/Comments
In response to reported taste and odor in drinking water, a 1988 site investigation did not identify a source of significant soil or groundwater gasoline contamination. Low levels of benzene contamination were found in a private well and a monitoring well. Extent of contamination unknown; health impact low. Formerly assigned to Hahn/Tonkin. The old service station across the highway from Sadler's is a potential source. The station was converted into a hardware store (Sterling Builder's Hardware and Lumber Supply) and no longer sells gasoline. It was a Texaco Station from January 1987 to September 1987, and was a Union 76 station before that. Ownership of the property has changed several times in the past 10 years. Site was originally thought to be a LUST site. K.P.B Parcel #06513211. Bolstridge Subdivision Addition Number 1, Lots 4 and 5, Block 1. Last staff assigned was English.
Action Information
| Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/1/1979 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). Sometime in 1979, following reports of hydrocarbon odor and taste in private wells, ADEC sampled 3 wells. Samples showed benzene up to 2.93 ppm (should be ppb?). | Former Staff |
| 1/1/1986 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). ADEC sampled five wells near Mile 81 of the Sterling Highway in 1986 and found low levels of benzene (up to 3.6 ppb) in the Sadler's Furniture water well. The old service station across the highway from Sadler's is a potential source. | Former Staff |
| 7/19/1988 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = MS - Monitoring/Sampling). This site has been nominated for inclusion in the LUST Trust program. Water samples were collected on 7/19/88 from the four occupied properties that may be affected by this suspected contamination. One sample was contaminated with 1.7 ppb benzene. | Former Staff |
| 11/1/1988 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = MS - Monitoring/Sampling). ADEC contracted Woodward-Clyde Consultants to install a monitoring well and 4 soil borings and conduct a soil gas survey (7 gas probes) to determine the potential source and extent of the contamination. The final report is dated May 1989. Low concentrations of benzene were detected in both the upper and lower aquifers, but the contaminant source was not determined. 5.4 ppb benzene was reported from a monitoring well. | Former Staff |
| 11/1/1988 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = SA2 - Phase II Site Assessment (General)). | Former Staff |
| 5/1/1989 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = SA2 - Phase II Site Assessment (General)). | Former Staff |
| 8/1/1989 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = MS - Monitoring/Sampling). The monitoring wells (Harding Lawson) were reportedly sampled in August 1989 by ADEC, however, no references or test results exist in the KDO project file. | Former Staff |
| 6/14/1990 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). Shannon and Wilson was contracted to do additional investigative work which involved drilling and sampling 4 soil borings, of which 3 were converted to monitoring wells. The three monitoring wells and three private water wells were purged and sampled. Nine soil samples were submitted and analyzed by EPA 8020 and results ranged from non-detectable to trace levels of BTEX. Two of the six water samples (1 monitoring well and 1 private well) exhibited trace levels of EPA 503.1 parameters. A report was submitted to ADEC in September 1990. | Former Staff |

| 6/1/1991 | Update or Other Action | Site Closure letter sent this date. | Former Staff |
| 5/5/1994 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = SLSW - State Lead Scope of Work). Developed a state lead scope of work to remove and abandon two monitor wells around the Sadler's Furniture store. Shannon and Wilson was awarded the contract. | Former Staff |
| 9/28/1994 | Site Closure Approved | MWs were abandoned according to a September 28, 1994, report that Shannon and Wilson provided under contract to ADEC. | Paul Horwath |
| 5/30/2002 | Update or Other Action | The contamination at the Sadler's Furniture store may have come from the Naptowne Trading Post LUST (89230013102) site, or it could have come from the Moose River Mercantile LUST (93230015301) site. Or there may never have been thoroughly confirmed contamination ever present on the Sadler's site. We called it Sadler's since 1 or 2 ppb contamination was detected in the Sadler well once or maybe twice years ago (early to mid 80s). We never had sufficient sampling with high enough concentrations detected to ever have an absolutely confirmed impact to their well. And there's no smoking gun responsible for this contamination, however the two sites I've identified above would be the two most likely possibilities. Both or them were within potential striking distance of the Sadler's well, however by the time those two sites were assessed, the plumes may have already spent themselves... though they may have been responsible for an impact to the Sadler's well at some earlier date. | Paul Horwath |
| 4/20/2004 | Update or Other Action | File number assigned and entered into the Fileroom DB and CS DB. | Alyce Hughey |
| 9/23/2005 | GIS Position Updated | Using Figures 1 and 2 from a Soil & Groundwater Assessment Mile 81 Sterling Highway, from Shannon & Wilson, dated September 1990, in conjunction with TopoZone Pro and the KPB Parcel Lookup, entered the coordinates for this site. Metadata includes No Topo Basemap, TopoZone Pro Street Maps, Black and White Aerial Photo, on a Medium Size Map, View Scale 1:10,000, Coordinate Datum NAD83. High degree of confidence in accuracy of location. | Alyce Hughey |
