Problems/Comments

On April 01, 2002, three composite samples were collected from the Allen Marine Shipyard. The samples were collected from the maintenance shop floor (shop), the marine railway area (sandblast area) and a test pit area (test pit) west of the marine rail structure. Contamination was identified near the Allen Marine Shipyard based on the following sample results and observations. A composite soil sample results collected from the marine railway sandblasting area indicate arsenic, chromium, and cadmium (7.6 mg/kg) at concentrations exceeding ADEC cleanup levels (depth of samples not provided). The maintenance shop contained diesel range organics at 1,900 mg/kg, residual range organics at 13,000 mg/kg, arsenic from 41 to 512 mg/kg, and chromium from 67 to 102 mg/kg. An oil layer, appearing to be bunker oil, in the test pit on the property had high headspace readings. In sediment samples seaward of the Allen Marine Shipyard, elevated levels of arsenic 1,060 mg/kg, copper 2,940 mg/kg, lead 1,910 mg/kg, zinc 7,590 mg/kg, tributyltin 13 mg/kg, benz(a)pyrene 2.6 mg/kg, and tri-n-butyltin 13 mg/kg, and detections of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Stained areas (6 inches to 2 feet in diameter) were observed in the maintenance shop and sandblasting grit, which had the appearance of black sand, was observed covering most of the area between the concrete marine rails.
