Problems/Comments
The Leisnoi Housing area, including Building 300, was located near a bluff approximately 100 feet high on the eastern coast of Woody Island. The former housing area was the primary housing occupied by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), consisted of approximately 15 buildings, and operated from 1941 until 1985. Building 300 was referred to as the COMSERFAC (Community Services Facility). It was a single-story, wood-framed building constructed on approximately 40 creosote-treated wood pilings with weathered wooden exterior siding. A 500-gallon aboveground storage tank (AST) used for heating fuel was located at the southwestern corner of the building and consisted of a single-walled steel tank with dimensions of 4 feet diameter by 5.5 feet, with one-half of the tank buried in the ground. When Building 300 and the AST were decommissioned in 2003, petroleum contamination was observed and diesel range organics were confirmed in soil above DEC cleanup levels.
