Problems/Comments
Six fuel drums with small amounts of product and 1/3 cubic yard of oil-stained soil were located near the North Fork of Ship Creek. Site was used by the Army in WWII and again from 1966 to 1971 for field training activities as part of the Fort Richardson military reservation. Broken battery parts found and related debris could fit into a 5 gallon bucket. Elevated levels of cadmium found in some pits. U.S. Army disposed of property in 1971. Current owner is Chugach State Park. Sampling on 10/9/91 found diesel and oil, no metals. Site entered by Shannon and Wilson. Last staff assigned was Halverson.

9/21/2009 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | DEC and the Corps of Engineers signed the Project Closeout Report, Containerized Hazardous, Toxic, or Radioactive Waste (CON/HTRW) project, Chugach Mts Ship Creek, Sept. 2009. The area of concern had been one or two drums, oil stained soil around the drums and broken batteries. In September of 1995, B&B Environmental, under contract to the Corps, removed the drum and approximately 5 gallons of soil and broken battery parts and disposed of them at a licensed disposal facility. Due to the de-minimis volume of any residual contamianted soil and the remote site loction, the site does not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment. | John Halverson |
