Problems/Comments
In July 2021, two underground storage tanks (UST) were removed from the Alaska Department of Corrections property. The USTs were 2,000-gallon gasoline and diesel tanks. The contaminated soils were found in the following problem areas: feed line near dispenser, feed/return line, vent line, feed/return sump, center of tank and the cause is unknown. Analytical samples from the excavation indicated that exceedances of the naphthalene migration to groundwater cleanup level were present in the excavation, at approximately 6.5 to 7 feet below the ground surface (bgs). In August 2021, the excavation was advanced 5 feet below the original excavation base to a total depth of 8.5 to 12.5 feet bgs. Confirmation samples and samples collected from the temporary stockpile were either below the ADEC cleanup level or non-detect for all analytes. The excavation was backfilled with the temporarily stockpiled soil and clean fill. Excess stockpiled soils were land spread onsite.
