Problems/Comments
The Eklutna Tailrace is owned by ADNR; however, ADF&G is responsible for management and all improvements to the land as the designated leasee. There have been reports of potential soil contamination. Along the outer edge of the Tailrace’s manmade channel banks, a variety of miscellaneous disposed solid waste (e.g. cars pre-dating the 1970's, refrigerators, and steel drums in which the contents are unknown) was dumped/disposed of from an unknown source. In October 2022, Shannon & Wilson conducted site characterization efforts at the site. The purpose of the project activities was to determine whether contamination is present at the site due to previous dumping. Shannon & Wilson advanced 15 hand borings, installed three temporary monitoring wells and collected analytical soil and groundwater samples. Results of the characterization efforts identified DRO, 1,2-dibromoethane, naphthalene, and arsenic contamination in soil and DRO and RRO contamination in groundwater exceeding the applicate cleanup levels. In October 2023, additional site characterization activities were conducted by Shannon & Wilson to further delineate the extent of contamination. Results of the 2023 characterization efforts identified benzene, ethylbenzene, and naphthalene contamination in groundwater exceeding the ADEC Table C cleanup levels in Well MW9. The remaining soil, groundwater, sediment, and surface water tested analytes were either not detected or detected at concentrations below the ADEC Method Two cleanup levels.
