Problems/Comments
In October 2021, a regulated 2000-gallon diesel underground storage tank (UST) was removed, and contamination was found in the soil above ADEC migration to groundwater clean-up levels. This UST was installed in 1991 at the Bald Mountain Airstrip and was used to fuel a generator. The UST was located in a vault made of heavy timbers with the bottom of the UST extending about 1.5 feet below surrounding ground surface. The contamination source is likely due to numerous small spills during refueling operations over the last 30 years. The soil samples with diesel range organics (DRO) contamination also had detected levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gasoline range organic (GRO), and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) all below ADEC migration to groundwater clean-up levels. Approximately two cubic yards of contaminated soil were excavated and placed back in the excavation after soil samples (in-situ) were collected.
