Problems/Comments
This property is 2.4 acres and is owned by Ahtna, Inc. The property was obtained from the federal government through conveyance under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). The Bear Creek Pit has traditionally been used as a trailhead for subsistence activities and more recently a gravel pit was developed next to the site. These activities have led to the area being used as an illegal dump site by unknown persons. There are petroleum products, suspected asbestos, batteries, abandoned vehicles, needles, empty drums, and other solid waste objects present at this area. ADEC conducted a Preliminary Assessment at this location at the request of EPA and the Native Village of Gakona. Site assessment included the collection of analytical surface soil samples that were analyzed for GRO, DRO, RRO, VOCs, PAHs, PCBs, and Metals. Sample results identified the presence of DRO above cleanup levels at a concentration of 978 mg/kg. Methylene chloride was detected above migration to groundwater cleanup levels at a concentration of 0.467 mg/kg.
